Eating Burnt Food and Vegetarian Diets

Post by Dave on Wed Dec 26, 2012 6:38 pm

I just read this hilarious reply to a question someone asked online about whether or not it is bad to eat burnt food.

Yes, there are carcinogens. Who cares?
Heat causes chemical reactions to occur. Some of those chemicals are harmful. In particular, heterocyclic amines form when very high heat hits meat. (Fat dripping into the coals is a particularly huge source of this). And heterocyclic amines (HCAs) cause cancer.

Why don't I worry? Because HCAs cause cancer when you feed large doses to rats. I don't eat large doses of HCAs. I eat grilled burgers, which have a few micrograms of HCA. I've never seen any study that shows that people who grill more get more cancer.

People who eat more meat do get more cancer, it's true. If you're really scared about it, stop grilling meat and start grilling vegetables. We'd all be a lot healthier on a vegetarian diet. (Well, that's not true, either. We'd get less cancer but we'd also have a lot more protein-deficient people running around. Or rather, walking around.)

The upshot: yeah, the tasty charred burger is just riddled with cancer. It's astonishing that you can even finish it without chemotherapy. Maybe the ketchup prevents cancer.

And yes the reason I looked this up is because I am enjoying a bowl of vegetables that I *forgot* on the stove. They're nice and crispy.

Steak on the BBQ - burnt and crispy on the outside and juicy and rare on the inside.

That's the only way I eat steak. The wife is always nagging me about carcinogens, thanks for this Dave...

Better stick to the ketchup to be safe :lol!:

Rasta - is that organic ketchup?

I did a 21 day cleanse before we became pregnant with Lil C. We ate mostly raw or semi raw...it was great. I felt awesome, great mood and lost 27lbs...by eating clean.

I tried a few weeks of 24 hour fasts on the same day of the week. Along with fairly clean eating (I'm not a food Nazi), I felt that the general feeling I have of not really ever being rested went away.
I had a general feeling of well-being.

Here is a list of everything known to be carcinogenic, or possibly carcinogenic. (it's very technical)

http://monographs.iarc.fr/ENG/Classification/index.php

Of course, because of inherent limitations in the DNA repair mechanisms, if humans lived long enough, they would all eventually develop cancer so you're pretty much doomed no matter what.

Well, we could build nano-machines to check our DNA for errors, cure our cancer, etc. Our cells can't check their DNA against a reference source, but future nano-machines could.

Or be programmed to destroy the human race. But we were doomed anyway.

Never tried Organic.

Glad the 21 day cleanse worked well for you.

Another 21 day cleanse and another Lil C :)
