Tolkien wrote The Hobbit for a little younger reader than the Lord of the Rings trilogy. If you liked the detail of The Hobbit you'll enjoy the much greater depth of LOTR. If OTOH you enjoyed the simplicity of The Hobbit than LOTR might be too involved for you. I'd say not though, I'm betting you'd love reading the trilogy.

I agree. The LOTR is my all-time favorite book trilogy; not ever reading them is a travesty in my opinion.

LOTR and Dune are the best of the best of scifi/fantasy, imo.

The movie (dune) was extra cheesy. The books were quite literally addicting for me. I didn't study as much while I was reading the series, haha.

Nothing will replace the first one, but the sequels were pretty good and the prequels actually weren't bad either, especially the 'thinking machine' ones.

If anyone likes action/fantasy/noir, Jim Butcher's 'The Dresden Files' book series is something of a guilty pleasure of mine.

I have the first two on pdf if y'all want a PM. There are like 13 or 14 now, I've read all of 'em except the one that just came out like last month... I got a B&N gift card for Christmas so I'm gonna try and stop by the bookstore to buy it soon.

...Okay, looks like we can't attach pdfs in PMs anymore. I tried to find pdf links on google (where I'd found 'em before) but it looks like they've been taken down. Looks like 'Proven Guilty', a book from later in the series, can be found online in some places though.

Enders Game and Speaker for the Dead are perhaps my favorites, but it's hard to choose when you read so much.
CLive Barker's Imajica is a personal favorite, and Robert McCammon's Blue World.

I haven't read Dresden (did catch some of the TV series), but along those lines the very early Repairman Jack novels by F. Paul Wilson were a lot of fun. I stopped reading after the first 4. Series can get a bit cumbersome.

They're good. The first few are pretty smart and then they kinda go downhill because Child uses the same formula for every book.
I heard the movie was (objectively) pretty decent. Rabid fanboys are whining that Cruise is 'too darn small' for the role--a valid critique because Reacher is basically a present-day Conan, 6'4'' and bulky, and solves problems with brute force. That's basically a key point in the stories.
That said, I just watched 'Collateral' last night and Cruise could probably pull the role off if not nearly the stature.

Apparently, Guillermo del toro is making a new anime-based movie--monsters vs giant mechs.

He's a fantastic director, and he's been given a huge budget for this... I actually have high hopes.

Huge fan of Guillermo del Toro. Although, his last couple of movies were more along the lines of 'sub-par' in my book. I loved The Orphanage and Pan's Labyrinth though. He also has a Vampire book series out with Chuck Hogan...the name escapes me right now. I've read the 1st two in the series and they're really good.

Read the 14th book of Jim Butcher's Dresden series, 'Cold Days', last night. It was really, really good. #13 was subpar but this one was back on the level as far as his writing/entertainment quality usually goes.

Hmm... Anime, yeah. Though honestly, I mostly watch it for the Japanese

I pretty much only watch one show right now. Well, kinda two. Main and spin-off.

I go to the cinema once a year, at most. Last one I watched was Sherlock Holmes, A Game of Shadows - which I, btw, like a lot! But in general, I don't watch movies. I'm quite bad at single tasking, and watching a movie is too much of doing that, I guess.

I like any movie with great (read that- CG) special effects. That limits my theater going to the blockbusters.
In general, I think foreign flicks have more "body" to them.

If you guys like martial arts action, then watch Streetfighter I,II,III and VI, not the anime ones, but the ones with Sonny Chiba.
They're pretty politically incorrect, but if you're a fan of ultra-violence and some usefull mma techniques (don't try at home.)
his films are hands down THE BEST.

I wanna watch The Wrestler, Mortal kombat remake, Robocop remake,

The Thing 2011 was pretty awesome. great mix of suspense and horror.
The Thing 1982, is one of my favourite films of all time.
Street Kings 2008, entertaining movie, Forest Whitaker gives a really compelling speech at the end, best part imo.
Dredd was pretty cool, I like the original more though, "I am thuh laaw!"-Stallone.
Soldier 1998, a neat film with life lessons. Kurt Russel was in pretty awesome shape for this role.
Mortal Kombat 1995, cheesy goodness, with a soundtrack you can't get out of your head.
Predator 1987, Every film after this featuring the Predator or any likeness is a crime against cinema.
Robocp 1987, probably my most favourite.
Sin City 2005,Bruce Willis and Mickey Rourke had the best stories imo.
The Punisher 2003, great film, Thomas Jane allegedly gained 30lbs for the role.
Machete 2010, actually hilarious once you get past the grossness.
The Terminator 1984, this one and only this one.
Black Dynamite 2009, hilarious, also has "kungfu".

Can't think of any more right now.

iron man 3. Tbh, underwhelming end to an underwhelming trilogy, though the action finale was pretty cool.

Star trek into darkness. Cool movie, great villain. Benedict Cumberbatch is awesome.

Season finale of 'arrow' was a solid end to a solid 23-episode tv series....

'Cloverfield'. Decent monster movie, but I've seen a few 'found footage' pieces by now and the novelty's worn off. On that note, 'Chronicle' is excellent.

'Safety not guaranteed'--very well made low budget flick, partway between science fiction and rom-com.

'Jack Reacher'--very good despite tom cruise. Fit the book pretty closely which I liked.

I can't believe you guys watch Arrow. I saw a few mins and it looked very "Canadian".

Anyone watch Game Of Thrones? I haven't seen much of the second season, but I'm pretty stoked.

I saw the first two seasons of The Killing, but I dunno about the third, kinda depressing show.

Not sure what that means? It's pretty mindless entertainment--not much of a plot or story, etc. but the acting's gotten better and the action is phenomenal for a tv show. Lots of Chinese-style martial arts being used.

I haven't watched GoT. I want to read the books first, which I've been meaning to, but I just haven't gotten around to it.
