Amit's 2013 Training Logs

Finally got a chance to make a new log for this year. Lot going on last few days since I got back from Christmas vacation. Have been training very regularly, just haven't gotten a chance to post it here.

As for the goals this year
- Long Distance Cycling - a.k.a Randonneuring seems appealing at this point in my life. Gonna try ride a few of those in adirondacks and Pennsylvania. The only kindaa sucky thing about it is, these rides start at 7-ish in the morning, and these places are 2-3 hours from my house. So I have get up really early, OR stay there over night. Lets see how it all works out.
- Running is on the menu. Knees protested loud and clear last year against running, so no heavy mileage. But gonna run some. Just love it too much ! Might have to sacrifice some upper body work because of time-management, but its aiight. Biceps don't help me run or ride the bike much :D

And now for some workouts -

3rd Jan. 2013 Thursday - 28 mile bike ride - in - 23F at 6 am :grrr!: :grrr!: :grrr!: My brain froze in those 2 hours. I wasn't sure if frozen fingers hurt more, or legs hurt more to keep up enough wattage not to freeze to death ! Every minute of this ride hurt !!

8.4 mile run. Didn't time it. Low to medium speed.

I bet you were cold on that 23F bike ride!! That's discipline I don't have. My warm bed won't let me leave :)

IMO- listen to your body (knees), we don't need another beat up/ broken up body around here.
I'm really liking the strength work I'm doing even though it's not really much "strength" :tongue:

Amit, do you do any foam rolling? If not, try rolling your calves, inner thighs, quads, and IT band. It just might help!

Cheese, no not much of foam-rolling. I do stretch and yoga very religiously. And that includes stretching pretty much every muscle of leg. Quads, hammies, inner thigh, calves, glutes. I have tried foam rolling in the past, but for some reasons, stretching felt better compared to foam rolling. It is just running that gets me in the knees like nothing does ! If I really wanted to "fix the root" of the problem, I have to teach myself how to land softer while running. I am very convinced that reducing the impact while running is the only way to keep a long running career ! Just don't have the patience to teach myself a whole new way of running. Especially since tennis is one of my sports, and I tend to give it all on the court, any good lessons that I teach myself about landing soft will all go down the drain on the tennis court where it is all about pounding the court, and getting the ball :bounce: So I am still debating if I should let go of tennis for some time to teach myself running, or enjoy tennis to its fullest !

And for yesterdays workout -
AM - 1 Hour Power Yoga Bryan Kest

PM - Gymn
B'Bell Bench - 95 lbs - 10, 10, 8, 6, 5, 5, 5
Lat pull down machine - 150 lbs - 10, 10, 10, 8, 6
Seated DB OHP - 20 lbs - 10 x 5
Chinup Holds at top and mid positions for 5 deep breaths - 5 Sets
Cable Bicep Curls - 10 x 5
Cable Tricep Pushdowns - 10 x 5
Forearm Curls - 35 lbs - 10 x 5

Experimented with keeping breaks to strictly 60 seconds between each set, and no more than 2 minutes or so between each excercise. Enjoyed it. Hurts lot more that way !

Today morning, just didn't feel like it so calling it a rest day.

AM bike ride - 36.7 miles - 2 hours 24 min. Rolling hills, no major climbs.

Had to load up grocery at office in the evening so no workout in the evening. With ride back home, it was a 40 mile day. Pretty happy mileage wise :mrgreen:

So itlives, to answer your question - This was an organized ride in the adirondack mountains around upstate NY region.

The make the route such that we usually get some kind of convenience stores or gas-stations every 15-25 miles or so. We would stop there, do our things and move on.

This was just a ride, not a race. We had 5 riders. one bailed out at 30 miles, one bailed out at 54 miles, one was hard-core so he took off never to be seen for the rest of the ride. During the last 46 miles of the ride, it was just me and the ride-organizer left !

I still don't have legs or confidence to attempt a race for such a long distance. Just getting a couple of rides like this will boost up my confidence, and then I will attempt to ride hard (not go all out !) for longer rides.

That was me at 54 miles :mrgreen: (my actual longest ride is 52 miles).

That sounds like fun for a cycler!

Nice! You're just a regular all around badass these days. Was it snowing? or just real cold?

Aiight, so I donno what happened. Mentally burnt out, tired of the cold weather, not sure, but only worked out one day out of the entire last week. Woke up on 3 different days to go out and ride but just didn't have the will. Today morning, I was all determined for a long ride. Weather report said high wind warnings with gusts of 50 mph so didn't go out. Didn't get that windy either. And next week gets super cold. I guess lot of treadmill action in store !

Got some okay runs last two days -

Amit- I did one of Rodney Yee's hour long sessions the other day. There were a couple of poses I could NOT do (half-moon and one other).
It's easier the Brian's. But I still felt it the next day!

Thanks daratmastah. definitely not easy ! Getting up and out in cold early in the morning is as much of a mental battle as physical !

Yeah, Mike, about yoga - the power yoga session of Bryan Kest is definitely not easy. I have Rodney Yee's Yoga Conditioning for atheletes which is not as difficult. The thing about these yoga sessions is, it is pretty much upto you. You can make them intense if you focus real hard, concentrate and try to go deep into the poses. You do that, and you got a great session, but it takes it out of you .. Atleast for me !

Epic Failure !!

Aiight. Back now ! Just busy and grumpy last few days. Workout wise - had a 25 mile bike ride Monday in 23F. However, that is not too bad.

Here is the epic failure -

So last Saturday was my attempt at first Randonnee event in Pensylvenia. (A 200km bicycle ride that has to be finished in given amount of time). It was around 14F when I woke up and checked the weather down there. Right there mentally I had given up, and started contemplating excuses to not go there. I figured let me go there, and start, and see where it goes. I reach there, sign up and all. Turns out I was just a kid there ! There was almost no one below 50 years ! Legs, body, everything else was fine. Cold was my biggest nemesis. Especially keeping my fingertips and toes warm. I was dressed very technically, chemical warmers in gloves and shoes and all. It was around 18F by the time sun came out and we started riding. The first 30 minutes or so in the ride, I wanted to talk to some riders, but my jaws and face was so badly frozen I couldn't move them to speak ! An hour into the ride, water bottle hopelessly frozen. So there goes any chances of hydrating. (Not that I was feeling dehydrated or anything.) At the first check point - 42 miles, it had "warmed up" to 24F ! Water bottle - a rock solid block of ice. Mentally I had given up. The organizer tried to talk me into keep riding because physically I was all fine except frozen fingers, but mentally I had given up. Turns out that another rider (a freaking recumbant) had given up also. Both of us ended up taking the ride of shame back to start.

It turns out that there were 16 riders. One of them gave up at around 12 miles left to go. 13 people actually FINISHED the ride. Bad ass mofo's is all I can say for them. And if those temp's were not enough, after around 6 hours into the ride, it snowed. I asked them if that was the coldest they had ridden ever. They said NO. They have done worst than that. They have ridden in single digits. And these are a bunch of 50 year olds we are talking about :twisted:

So there was my first attempt. Next 200km is in March.

Bottom line - HTFU !!

Have to leave, but will post more later !

Dude! Don't they have summer rides you could do? Those temps can't be healthy for you and I thought we are all about health around here. That just sounds like ...bleh.

I always thought that running/biking in sub 20F weather was bad for you. Not sure if it is, but I always used that as a reason to train indoors during the winter, though I'm not sure the stale air of the gym was much better.

You'll be much better prepared for the one in March, though I imagine that'll be a tad bit warmer than this one.

I think it's pretty incredible that you even gave it a shot in this weather.

Roughly 125 miles on a bike in 20's degree weather?

Dang Amit!! That is a really long ride to start the day. Do you have time off or did you have to get up REALLY early to do that?

ccheatum, all my rides are all done on full 8 hour 9-5 working days. Get up at 5 in the morning, on the road by 5.30 am, back by around 8-ish. My office is only 4 miles away so a virtually non-existent commute does help.

Yesterday - AM - 40 mile It was around 25F when I started. Probably warmed up a bit later into the ride. Did manufacture some ice in the waterbottle on the ride :twisted:

What makes me mad around here is how bike unfriendly this place is. My work is only 5 miles away - 7 if I take the longer "safer" route. Even the safer route will get you killed. No respect , I tell ya!
All they can talk about around here is when are we going to get a dog park!

Yea itlives, that is one benifit of being around NY/NJ area. Plenty of cyclists here ! Its not that bad. We do get an occassional hornkers here and there but over all it is aiight here.

15 Feb. 2013 Fri.

AM - 8.4 mile run .. Slow. Icy spots at the park so had to be careful. Didn't time it.

Wow. Almost a week since I have posted ! A bit busy at work and not getting enough time. O well .. Last weekend was long weekend for us which was an absolute horse's arse. Saturday was predicted snow which never happened. Sunday and Monday was supposedly a bit better weather, but turned out COLD. I wussed out ! Lets see how this weekend goes.

19 Feb. 2013 Tuesday - Around 20 miles bike ride in morning - All flat

20 Feb. 2013 Wed. - Around 40 miles in the morning. Rolling hills.

21 Feb. 2013 Thurs.
AM - Treadmill run.
- 20 min. around 7.2 mph average
- around 15 min. speed and hill intervals

10 double pushup burpees
5 NG Chinups
3 Sets

Lot of stretching

Will do some yoga in the evening.

Neah, no where near. Greek is a different clan. It will take me another 25 years to catch up. (Not by me getting better, but by him becoming 80+ years old, and hopefully when I am in my mid 50's, I can almost match him !)

AM - 38 miler - 24F - Around 2 hours and some change. I used to hate the cold, but now I am starting to love the pain of frozen fingers and toes ! :toothy:

On a side note - Here is something that will probably make Greek proud ! Got a brand spanking new CAAD-10 - 105. BIG difference compared to my previous Trek Portland. Switching all my gears and stuff to ride more roadie style and less of a tourer style !! Will post pictures soon. The bike already has 180 miles on it :mrgreen: Absolutely loving the way it handles.

Here it is !! Still a little bit work in progress. Pedals are getting changed. Not sure if I want a second water bottle cage, or leave that slot empty to put the pump on for randonneur rides ..

yet another cold, wet, misty, foggy century !

23 Feb. 2013 Sat.

Bike Ride - 100 Miles
Total Time - 8hrs 19 min.
In Saddle Time - 6hrs 15 min. or so
Avg. speed - around 12mph (If you consider in-saddle time, it is a bit over 15mph)
Rolling hills. Must be around 2500ft. or so of elevation
Temp. - Around 35F
Wet, rainy, misty, foggy day.

Aiight, so here is how it went. A long story so please be-warned to get bored cause I am no Erik or Gasdiver who can play with words :bike1:

Started at around 6 in the morning. I usually enjoy starting out on empty stomach, and then after around 40 miles, I feed the engine. So that right there ... Is a bit of a problem. On my route, I have towns all the way upto 30-32 miles, and then there is just mountains for next 10-12 miles. So get off the bike, get the fat-skii gloves off, and with frozen fingers, try to get energy bars out of my jersey pocket, open them and eat them while waiting out there in the cold. Right there, plans changed slightly. I was gonna carry on upto 50 miles and then come back, but I turned around from there, and decided to do the remaining 20 miles around my house on a bit easier terrain with slightly better temp's. So things were going good, I had a bottle of gatorade with me. Stopped at a gas-station at around 55th mile, guzzled a water bottle and carried on. Still cold, still wet, still misty, and now fog decided to show up to add more fun ! Legs are feeling fine, life is all good all the way upto 72 miles. Now mind that this is the return leg of my trip so I am only about 8 miles away from home. And baaaaaaam. Out of no where, I hit the wall !! I know that feeling EXACTLY. Have had that a lot of times before. The plan was to carry on all the way upto 80 miles back home, grab a bite at home, say hello to wifey and then do the rest of 20 miles. But there was no way I was gonna push one more pedal ! Get off the bike, guzzle down all of the remaining gatorade. Take a few breaths, let the gatorade do its thing, and in a minute or two, I was feeling fine. But I knew that I had to inhale some calories very very soon at the next available deli or gastation or cafe or whatever ! Start riding, and at around 74 miles, there is a nice cafe. Get off the bike, get the frozen fingers out of my wet gloves, once again get 2 HUGE muffins, and coffee, pay for it, and I sit down over there to eat. And all of a sudden, out of no where, I start shivering. All my layers were thoroughly wet from sweat/condensation, outside was wet from rain/mist. I sit there, eat all the food, hoping that the shivers will go away. It just kept getting worst. That became almost a 30-45 minute break, and still shivering pretty bad ! At that point I very very seriously evaluated if I should just call my wife and get picked up like a wuss, or think like an idiot, HTFU and try to ride the remaining 8 miles back home and call it a day. After lot of psyching myself up, I figured lets try riding a little bit and see if I can warm up a bit and atleast ride back home (which would still put me at 80 miles, not 100). Start riding. Luckily in about 5 minutes of riding, the engine warmed up and I was not feeling THAT bad. It was still crap because next 2 miles or so were all downhill. Which means no pedaling, but face all that cold wet wind ! But somehow after all that downhill, when I was about 3-4 miles away from home, I warmed up nice, and was feeling great and all motivated, ready to finish the remaining 20 miles instead of just calling quits at 80 miles. Didn't go home at all (or else I would have quit !!!). Just kept riding around, and finished the remaining miles to finish the 100 miles for the month of February.

So that was that. From almost taking the ride of shame back home, to actually finishing the entire ride !

2 energy bars
1 bottle of gatorade
2 huge muffins
1 cup of coffee

Several lessons have been learnt from this century
- Instead of riding faster, I have to try and better manage my food/rest stops to improve my over-all average. Which is tough in months of winter because I HAVE to get off the bike to get my hands out of the fat winter gloves to get any maneuverability in the fingers. I will have to keep riding as I chow down the bars instead of stop all the while as I eat the bars.
- I need to eat a bit more. Probably at around 60th mile, 80th mile and so on .. It is pretty interesting that you will be feeling like a million bucks at 70th mile, and then just out of no where at 71st mile, your body says NOPE, you are not going anywhere !!!!

Over all, very very happy that I was able to finish the ride. Almost cried when the meter read 100 :razz: This will be my third century since December. Have been trying to do atleast 1 century a month.

EDIT -

And I wonder what in the heck's name is up with cold, wet, damp weather every time I get out for a 100 mile ride ! Every single one of them it has been exactly same type of weather ! There was this one time when it was a sunny day which turned out to be too cold for me and I wussed out at mile 42 !!

Amit that was an EPIC story! Of course the first 72 miles are going to be the easy ones. But wholly crap, 100 miles, even with all the adversity!
