"There we were, me and Davy Crockett...

Post by MikeO on Sun Jan 20, 2013 3:06 pm

...shoulder to shoulder and backs to the wall..." Anyway, after not visiting BWC for a while, Dave sent me a pm about this place.

I've been feeling pretty beat up lately and have decided to give my lower body a month off (partly helped by a minor groin pull I got doing hill sprints). In the meantime, I'm hitting my upper body with various bodyweight exercises and doing loaded carries.
Being a voice teacher at a music school and playing no sport more strenuous than golf, I'm starting to reassess what my workout needs are. Also, I'm 56, so I need to start thinking about making mobility the priority over strength.
Lovely to be here with you all.

Ever since I met Master Choi (a Hap Ki Do instructor) a few years ago, I no longer considered 56 to be old. He was 56 and as nimble and spry as all get out.

But 57 is old. :P jk

Oh, I know. It seems so far off. Hopefully, I won't experience too much of decline between now and then.

57 is ancient.

Welcome MikeO.

I jacked up my groin a little over a week ago on a long run and running hard up hills. I iced for a couple days then was told to switch to heat, but my heating pad is busted. I did massage the hell out of it daily and started easy stretching after about 4 days. So far so good, I ran pretty pretty hard today.

Do you push yourself really hard often or were those hill sprints just a wild hair? Because at my ancient age of 50 I'm having to re-evaluate previous training methods. (Over) half the battle is just showing up to the starting line injury free!!

Surely you don't mean no more running tough mudders with your foot falling off or bike-press-burpees at the top of a hard ride, do you?

Almost never. I prefer to sandbag my way through life. However, sometimes I'll just do too much (more overkill than trying).

I really shouldn't be doing any kind of running. I've got some tearing in my left medial meniscus and running with that is just pushing my luck.

Not being injured, or not being any further injured, has become important to me, too. Also, just not feeling beat up has become more of a concern for me. Going crazy with back squats was a mistake. I've worn out my legs in addition to injuring my back a while ago.

Thanks for all your responses, so far, everyone.
