I'd hate to upset my grammy

Post by Dave on Mon Jan 28, 2013 7:40 am

If I were using incorrect grammar consistently (like making the same mistake over and over), I would want to know. I would not bear any ill will towards anyone who enlightened me, on the contrary, I would thank them. But are most people this way? I try to avoid saying anything for the most part (except with family members, we sort of grew up correcting each other's little mistakes), because I worry that it might be taken as an insult.

Would you want someone to correct you if you were making a spelling, grammar or some other kind of error again and again, would you just not care, or would you even be offended? I'm curious to hear others' perspectives on this. :magnify:

For example, I suspect myself of having misused "bear" and/or "bare" because the distinction has at times been a muddy one for me.

I suspect most young people barely know correct English.

A bear cannot bear witness.

You're going into the woods, a bare bear may eat your lunch.

The yore of yesterday is yours if you're inclined to seek it.

I'm always open to a little correction - to answer the question.

I don't mind. It's a bad habit of mine as well - correcting people that is. Not that it is necessarily "bad" mind you, but from my experiences, most people do not appreciate being corrected on a regular basis, whether it's sincere or just plain nitpicky.

My wife has her masters degree in english, but doesn't care to use proper grammar in common conversational texts/internet communications because it's "not worth the effort" or somesuch like that. Drives me nuts. But then I drive her nuts by correcting it for her. :P

I would actually mind... just about any grammatical mistakes I make are deliberate and/or I just can't be bothered. Absurd amounts of shorthand are inexcusable, of course.
I guess I can identify with daratmastah's better half on this one

As the linguistics nerd I am, I absolutely cannot stand grammar or spelling mistakes, however I do feel it misplaced and arrogant or like a know-it-all for correcting the English of someone who's a native speaker, while I myself am not.

The only thing I don't care all THAT too much about would be commas. Mainly because I just place as I see fit, myself - and often, I probably put too many, because you put a lot more commas in Danish writing, than in English.

When I spot mistakes, they scream to me, and make my eyes ache. While it may sound hysterical, much more than that, it is friggin' annoying!

Yet, despite my need for correct writing, I absolutely LOVE lol-speak - but that may be due to my lingo-mind, as well...

Yeah it can come across that way, especially if the person being corrected was simply being lazy or made a typo, in which case, who cares, it's his or her choice.

The only thing I don't care all THAT too much about would be commas. Mainly because I just place as I see fit, myself - and often, I probably put too many, because you put a lot more commas in Danish writing, than in English.

Interesting. There seems to be a fair number of grammar websites who imply that commas are almost arbitrary, although in my mind I do have a specific "Comma dos and don'ts".

When I spot mistakes, they scream to me, and make my eyes ache. While it may sound hysterical, much more than that, it is friggin' annoying!

I'm glad you said it, now I don't feel so guilty. I'm the very same way.

Well, transitive and intransitive words just suck. Not just in English, but many Danish ones are pretty darn gnarly as well. Same goes for Japanese; and speaking of Japanese, don't get me started on causative-passive!

Transitive word "harau" (to pay), has the causative-passive form: "harawaserareru" - to be made to pay. It's clumsy in English, but it's like "he was made pay the ticket by the police".
I spent most of the time last time we played soccer, trying to find the right way of conjugating another word in that form. Totally ruined my focus

I just read an entry in my daughters' FB. This is a kid that got straight A's in school. It looked like one, uninterrupted stream of thought. No punctuation except an occasional period. No capitals. I think it's just laziness. If not, then it's purposeful appealing to (here we go again) the lowest common denominator.

If I make a mistake that causes my meaning to be misunderstood, I want to know. If I violated a convention, but still made sense, keep it to yourself. I never signed the agreement. 'Wronger' is wrong, but 'stronger' isn't? Pfft.

Quoted from UrbanDictionary:

"Rikke:
An ancient skandinavian word for beautiful and morning grumpy.
She is so rikke in the morning, but so rikke at night"
(Psst, never mind the typos!)

Hoho~, that's me in a nutshell! I'm usually not very pleasant to be around in the morning, and I don't believe in the phrase "good morning".

Hahaha! No, I don't think you would pass on an thesis written in lol-speak!
She wrote a paper about lol-speak, and how it's actually already becoming an extinct language, despite having only existed for such a short time. I haven't read it, but that's what she told me.

I'd hate to lose lol-speak, though. It has this wonderful ability to make everything so much more fun :geg:

Look I like all of you guys and girls, but if you have issues with my grammer dont read my post. I did my years in school, did my time in the service, and I am even dating a school teacher that has 7 years of college, and 3 degrees to her name. In short I dont care,so dont correct my on my post. This is not my college thesis, my finally term paper or even my sons spelling list, its just a forum. A forum where we all have made up names and some even have made up workouts. To me its not a place to worry if I misspelled this or that or their or there.
