Re: Wrestling removed from Olympics

Post by Journeyman on Tue Feb 12, 2013 9:12 pm

Oooookay so what's the reasoning behind that?
Apart from being a very pure form of direct athletic competition, it's the most traditional olympic sport there is.
If they're worried about doping, that occurs in the vast majority of olympic sports anyway, so why bother.
If they're worried about violence... don't they still have TKD and Judo in there?

So strange.

I don't get it either - it's the most traditional olympic sport out there isn't it?

It can't get more basic : 2 men fighting against each other with nothing else than their bare hands.

Maybe they want to replace it with Justin Bieber vs Selena Gomze, competing at yoyo games, or blowing balloons out of chewing gum? that's gonna attract more TV spectators than a gay sport such as wrestling, eh?

Re: Wrestling removed from Olympics

Post by Bissen on Sat Feb 16, 2013 5:38 am

Recently talked this over with one of my friends. Wrestling is one of the most classic sports in the Olympics - why the heck would they want to remove it?

Couldn't they take... Tae Kwon Do, race walking, synchronized swimming or some other ridiculous sport? (Sorry TKD fans, but the competition form has gotten aerobics status.)

You know, in Denmark, synchronized swimming is of so little interest, that Danish tv hired two radio hosts to comment on the competition - it is absolutely hilarious. They name the moves themselves, and it's in the league of: "The lesbian mill", "the wriggling fish", "the gorilla". They used to host one of the best and funniest radio shows in Denmark

I guess weightlifting, and also all other fighting sports will be removed one by one, who needs violence and beast-like strength in our modern civilized world?
They will be replaced with newer and more appropriated sports such as typing and cash counting.

Racewalking? seriously? Just looked at it on Wikipedia and what is the meaning of this sports? :D

I haven't watched olympics much, but i can't wrap my head around the logic of this, especially if wrestling is removed and this isn't.

Let me just say that while I see ZERO excitement in that "sport" ( :roflol2: ), I nevertheless see it's benefits if one were to include it into his or her training as recovery. It would be stellar in that role.

The meaning? I'll tell you what it means. It means the IOC royally screwed up. It's like saying "We should make stretching, joint mobility and jumping jacks an Olympic event and eliminate Track and Field".

Re: Wrestling removed from Olympics

Post by Bissen on Sat Feb 23, 2013 3:09 pm

Meta, I believe that is very true. People (not speaking for myself, obviously, as I have no children, and actually doubt I'll even have any) tend to be super over protective of their children.

My aunt is an example. I remember her being so friggin worried about her two boys all the time! I was around 10 when my oldest cousin was born, but I had to be very careful all the time, blablabla.

My siblings, at that time 8, 6 and 3 y/o, used me as a doll, carrying me up and down the stairs, running with me on their shoulders - not that my parents didn't care, but they had the mentality "if she gets hurt and cries, she's OK." (It's not until she doesn't cry, we have a problem!)
AFAIK, I haven't been damaged from it... but I wouldn't really know

Finding a petition...

Post by 98poundweakling on Sun Feb 24, 2013 7:57 pm

Hey, All! just heard that there are petitions going around to request the reinstatement of wrestling into the Olympics. So far ca. 65,000 signatures collected. The address I heard was Change.com or something like that. If someone finds a link to a respectable petition, maybe they could post it here. I'd love to sign.

Point of View

Post by 98poundweakling on Sun Mar 17, 2013 6:58 pm

I saw this in SI, March 18, In Dan Patrick's Just My Type, his interview with Ronda Rousey, UFC fighter.

DP: Will MMA make it into the Olympics?
RR: I don't know. After I see that they're trying to get rid of wrestling, which was one of the inaugural sports of the Olympics, and they still have archery... I can't say there's any real common sense to the Olympic process right now.
DP: If you're going to do The Hunger Games, you can't rip archery.
RR: I'm not ripping archery. I'm just saying any activity like archery or golf or pistol shooting... If you don't break a sweat, it's a skill. If you break a sweat doing it, it's a sport.

Well if you want to get down to the nitty gritty, I don't mean sweat, but exertion. Golf has no real exertion. Pistol shooting, none to speak of and the same with archery, if you've already built up the appropriate muscles.
