12/3/12

1A) Sumo DLs - 5x320lbs, 3x340lbs, 8x355lbs - 10lb PR
2A) H. Rows - 3x12
3A) Glute Extensions - 3x12 @ 110lbs
3B) Hammer Curls - 3x8 @ 30lbs
4A) Row/Lat Raise combo - 3x10 @ 15lbs - tired of these

Later...

FS HeSPUs - 5,4,3

Will retest my dead after next cycle and change things up a bit. I'd like to pull 450, although that might be reaching just a tad bit. Who knows.

Also, only have 2 finals left, and they're ones I'm not worried about at all, so I'm transitioning to having a 2nd skill session on some days now.

After seeing stonecold's awesome one arm straddle elbow lever pics, I'm going to nail that trick down before Christmas break is over. Also, I AM GOING to get down windmills finally. And the HS-Elbow Lever-HS. And re-introducing front lever work back in.

I'll post that handwalking video up tonight sometime. So, it'll be up tonight or tomorrow. It's smoother-looking than it felt while I was doing it.

They're feeling better! I've only been doing the extensor work for 3 days so far, so no noticeable difference yet. BUT, I have been GTG'ing Front supports on the rings and those have really helped my elbows feel a ton better.

Elbow tendonitis is pretty frustrating.

I remember during my recent over use abuse to my elbows, thinking that next time Ill be smarter and know when to slow down and cut back on the volume.
I have to keep reminding myself that its better to take a break when the elbows are niggling, the to let things progress until I'm forced to take a few months off.

It's a hard balance - as you have to push it to progress.

Good to hear the elbows are feeling better.

It is incredibly frustrating. I've had tendinitis in my left elbow on 4 separate occasions, pushing for the OAC. I've finally learned my lesson I think though. I just have to remind myself that it's ok to take the long way there, if it keeps me healthy.

Impromptu workout in the PM:

1A) Front Lever negatives transition to advanced tuck front lever at parallel - 3x3 reps
2A) Clappy Feet Handstands - just like it sounds...going from straddle to feet together and clapping them each time for as long as possible. Much harder than it looks.

Something like that. I use it for more of a primer for getting used to moving other body parts while in a handstand...one of my goals is to spin on one hand like this guy (albeit it'll probably look much worse haha):

1.5 hours of regulation-sized field soccer... I forgot how tiring that is.

Probably some OA elbow lever work here in a couple of hours, and some handstand walking.

Yeah, his handstand spinning is just insane.

Switching up my training just a tad for this next cycle. Still 5/3/1 DL and Anderson Front Squats, however, I'm changing up the assistance work and making a push for the HS-Elbow Lever-HS, as well as continuing to beef up my elbow.

GTG: Front Supports, planches, front lever progressions.
Skill work: HS-Lever-HS, OA Elbow Lever, Windmill work.

Assistance work will be treated like main lift work (inspired by Jman's article about Eder) for this cycle. I'm going to go nuts on it and push the lifts as high as I can, basically.

This will be the last Sumo DL and Anderson Front Squat cycle. After this, it'll be either conventional or semi-sumo, and either: regular fronts, zerchers, or back squats. Kinda leaning towards zerchers or back squats.

Will also be experimenting with some CBL (just read Kiefer's book), to see how that works out for me. Will be keeping food mostly clean, however. Been eating like crap lately (luckily, I can still maintain 185-190 eating terribly), but that's gotta change.

Hahaha Dave. To deter you from posting more tabata stuff on my wall, here goes:

I, Josh T., hereby declare, that for the next 5 years (minimum), I will not be doing a single set of Tabata Front Squats. EVER. Or any other type of tabata squat.

Haha. I may do the sig klein challenge in January though. Sounds like one I'd be pretty good at.

Give it a try - I'm doing it at the moment. I was on CBL on and off the last few months, but since 4 weeks I'm doing it without break. Alex also did it; if you need any help on CBL let us know :D Dude...keeping the food mostly clean ?! The whole fun of CBL is based on being able to eat crappy foods and still get gains :eat2: ;)

For sure! I have the book though and have my plan all set up. I'm going to start in January when I get a little extra money. I plan on following most of his protocols to the letter.

And yeah, food 'mostly' clean. I'll still be enjoying Hot Chocolate on a regular basis and other crap sometimes, but I feel like crap when I eat like crap, so I'm keeping the crap levels down somewhat.

On an unrelated topic, this was a pretty good article that's more in line with my thoughts on strength/conditioning (and...ahem, tabata front squats or lack thereof):

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

1) Strength is the foundation of all other qualities. Check.
2) Conditioning is an easily gained quality. Strength takes a while to build.
3) If I'm going to condition, for, say, soccer or basketball (play intramurals in both), I'm going to *gasp* play soccer or basketball. Tabata Front Squats aren't going to help me any more than actually practicing and playing the sport will.
4) I don't think it's necessary for fat loss either. Every time I have made significant reductions in BF%, it has been while training heavy, with LOW volume, and done primarily through dietary adjustments. There's no need to do something that I absolutely hate.
5) Strength is fun. Conditioning sucks. Unless its through sports itself. Then it's awesome.

LOL Dave!

I just finished reading that article before I came here, I really enjoyed it. I've also spent my time on the ground gasping for air with my heart blasting at max speed from an all out set of squats or deadlifts and feel that is very effective cardiovascular training.

Nice!

I thought you meant doing a pushup in a held tuck-planche position, on bars or something. Which would be pretty badass nudge nudge (though not as specific towards your handstands)

Haven't tried those in a while. Might try them today.

One more final to go today (nutrition - what a joke), and I'm home free. I'll be stepping up the skill work once it's over.

My workouts are going to have a bit less structure to them...(the non-weight ones like today). Don't get me wrong, there will still be structure, but it's going to be more by feel than anything else. I'm at the point now anyway where I can structure things according to feel right on the spot anyway.

Good,hard, skill-based workout.

1A) Adv. Tuck Planche - 5 sets; tuck planche push-ups (for kicks and giggles) - 3,2
1B) One-Leg Front Lever Pulls from an L-Sit Deadstop on the floor - 5x3
2A) FS HeSPU - 6,6
2B) Elevated H. Rows - 10,8,10

Skillz

1A) One Finger Assisted Straddle Elbow Lever - 3 sets. I'm regularly getting 3-5 second holds on my left hand...right's a tad bit behind.

Also, GREAT ARTICLE...and it's freakin' spot on from what I've seen from the BtGB community.

Held a solid OA Straddle Elbow Lever (left hand) for 5 seconds yesterday. Longest hold thus far.

Yeah, I like GMB's message.

In other news...

Just got this book:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I've been wanting this book for a LONG time, and found it at a half price book store for 5 bucks. What a freakin' steal! For those who don't know... this is Fred Hatfield:

Also known as Dr. Squat..and he made that squat look like his you-know-what. Needless to say, I'm freakin' excited and going to be digging into the book like crazy.

Also, starting tomorrow, I will be starting the CBL preparation phase. And eliminating coffee for a month - been drinking too much lately (dang you finals stress..). Anyway, coffee will be re-implemented when I start doing ALL the CBL protocol stuff (I will be following it 100% to the letter...but I'm waiting for some money to come in before I can make some of the shakes/ workout protocol stuff he recommends. That's when coffee will come back in.).

That was an interesting article (didn't fully read it but skimmed it). One thing that puts me off about the GB forum is how dismissive Sommer and others are toward other methods of training. There are some really smart people on the forum who are dismissive of anything that isn't correct and technical gymnastics

It doesn't necessarily matter that coach Sommer is a world class gymnastics coach when it comes to teaching fitness to enthusiasts on the internet
