Like Button

Post by Dave on Tue Mar 12, 2013 12:53 am

Now there is a like button on the right side of all posts. You can press the + if you like the post, or the - if you dislike it.

Please use these criteria for liking (aka repping) a post

The post was specifically helpful to a question you asked.
The post contained good, useful and well presented information.
The post referred a new member to good resources or to another member whose training style is a perfect match for the new member's goals.
The post post was motivating, encouraging or otherwise demonstrated a good attitude characteristic of people who are reasonable, positive and successful.

If a post has any of these qualities, click the plus sign to rep the post and add to the reputation of the member who posted it.

Please use these criteria for disliking (aka negging) a post

The post was deliberately misleading.
The post contained blatantly false information or claims.
The post could only lead to confusion instead of enlightenment.
The post was discouraging or demonstrated a bad attitude characteristic of negative or unreasonable people who would rather create conflict, place blame or make excuses than succeed.

If the post has any of these qualities, click the minus sign to neg the post and decrease the reputation of the member who posted it.

Please be very selective in your use of the like/dislike feature, as each member only has a limited number of votes per day.

Additionally, members with fewer than 25 posts may not rep or neg posts. Members with a reputation of 10 or lower may not rep or neg posts, except of course Admin can always rep or neg. So basically, you guys have to wait a bit until Cheesedog and I rep enough posts, at which point the repping ripple will begin to spread more quickly.

The credit for this idea goes to TMK, who suggested it.

Just one thing, imo it would be more practical if everyone that doesn't have a negative amount of reps can rep others. Don't you think?

But if they're the kind of person repping in the wrong direction then they probably have negative reps themselves. Only the admins will be able to rep currently which is weird.

Ili, there are a number of people who can rep now, yourself included.

If someone has a red rep they can't rep anyone else, which is how it should be.

That is a perfectly legitimate concern. If the feature gets abused it can always be removed. But I agree, the community is a good group, so I doubt that it would become any kind of problem.

On another site I used to frequent, they had stars which represented their "rep" . The stars were under the screen name. Of course, stars only represent good reputation.
I don't know how many good reps per star, but I never got a star even though I got some good reps.

The forums I read that have the feature, have the option to vote/like a post, but not to neg it.

I don't know if that option is possible here. Dave, is it + and -, or nothing?

And if that's too much trouble, don't worry about it.

I also felt that the feature of liking without the option of disliking would be nice to have. I'm sure it's possible through a javascript, but I wouldn't be able to write one, I'd have to find one. I don't think I have time right now but if anyone can find one that will work with phpBB3 and suits our purposes I am willing to try it.

Okay guy and gals. You now have two options.

1. There is the reputation system on the right that you can use to like OR dislike a post. This does build up a positive or negative reputation for users.

2. There is the like button on the left that you can click if you like a post. This does not accumulate a "like total" for individual users.

Vote up top!

The whole rep system doesn't matter much anyways, it's completely secondary, and therefore can't have an impact on the community. We should be able to dislike any post we strongly disagree with. Not that would happen often. That's my opinion.

I like the option to like/upvote a post because it's an easy way to show some appreciation. If I don't have much to say or add, I can just give a like/upvote. Easy enough.

The reason I'm against negging is that if you're going to disagree, you should explain what your issue is. That way we don't have people taking cheap shots without having to at least type out their reasoning. Disagreement is fine, but either disagree openly or keep it to yourself. IMO.

Since we're sticking with just the like button (and since nobody is going to be out to unjustly sabotage another member's reputation), I've changed the requirements for being able to access the button. There are now no requirements other than being a member (i.e. no minimum post count or rep level) and you may like as many posts as you want per day.
