How do you measure your carbs etc?

Post by Guitar_maniac on Thu Mar 21, 2013 12:54 pm

I haven't really focused on my diet, ever. I have eaten healthy, had an average body. But lately i have seriously started looking at my mid section, it has begun to grow! :D Part of it is definitely from age. I've always dismissed strict eating as a thing that's too big and complicated to follow. But now i wanna give it a shot.

Do u use a food scale or some other, do you have an app on your phone for eating, or what?

Edit: I don't really know anything about this subject really, so feel free to fill me in on the necessary amounts etc. I know the 2 g protein per pound rule for gaining muscle.

I'm considering to start counting carbs (40%), protein (30%) and fat (30%).

I just google the nutrition content and calculate it, if it's not on the packaging.

The biggest problem with counting carbs that most people make is just counting all carbs the same. You should get most of your carbs from veggies as opposed to breads and sugary items.
Do some research about simple vs. complex carbs. Also, the time of day that you get your carbs will affect that waistline, too. In the AM when you're going to be going and burning calories is best. At night, not so.
I agree it is a lot of info. But if you don't take charge of your health, who will? A doctor? Heaven forbid!
As far as I"m concerned, doctors are like police. They are good at cleaning up the mess. We have to be good at keeping the mess from happening in the first place.

^^^agreed. You can however have carbs at night and it will be beneficial for recovery. Sometimes I have a bit of couscous at evening, when I feel for it.

I use Fitday.com, it calculates all the nutritional information for you, best of all its free.

As for counting carbs, It will give you a ratio of carbohydrate/protein/fat, but since you are just starting out I think it is important to keep it simple. Dont worry so much about the ratio and focus on eating all (or mostly) whole foods. Then all you need to do is input it into fitday to keep track of your food to make sure you are getting enough nutrition and the right amount of calories for your goal.

Thanks Dave. I thought we could maybe work on a list in this section.
I do not live by that word for word, I trust my own judgement, but there are some interesting infos in that links nonetheless AND in that as well:
The James Bond Builder: Skyfall Trainer Simon Waterson (bodybuilding)
He talks about food as well.

What do you all think about this?

- Calories: 4900
- Carbs: 800 gr
- Protein: 200 gr
- Fat: 100 gr

Would this work well? I'm 170 lbs.

Here's one of the more sober nutrition articles to come out in a while, and the first one I pretty much agree with 99%:
