Joe Weider 1919 -2013 (93yo)

Post by MF! on Sat Mar 23, 2013 9:11 pm

I'm not much into the bodybuilding community, hence my just finding out about him. Either way, it's a loss knowing the impact he had on the community and as well fitness.

That's not Joe Weider in the picture. Apparently he had his head added to someone else's body.

Apparently he was pretty strong, though, here he is one-arm pressing (presumably strictly) 90 pounds at sig klein's gym:

Anyway, apart from his lucrative empire of gay porn that he built up before moving onto promoting bodybuilding, he definitely had a big effect on worldwide physical culture in general. I'm not sure if it was necessarily a good thing, though. He beat out Bob Hoffman, who was definitely more into performance than aesthetics, but Hoffman was kind of a weirdo too.
Fatman would know more about the history than anyone else here, I think.

Don't forget, the two were kinda synonymous at the time in the minds of the uneducated public. So were weightlifting and bodybuilding. The first BB shows were held after weightlifting comps, and the same guys participated in both. Undoubtedly, the audience at the time consisted, to a large degree, of men who went there to ogle other men.

Hoffman also published pictures of scantily clad muscular men in his books and publications, but he publicly ridiculed Weider for doing the same :D They were competitors in business, and Hoffman, who seemed to possess a keen penchant for lies and exaggerations, never shied away from low blows to discredit the competition (like in the feud with Charles Atlas). Weider's empire continued to thrive until he became synonymous with the term "bodybuilding" and published many of the well-known muscle rags. He also ran the 'Mr Olympia' competition, relegating the old Mr Universe to amateur status. Then in the 1960s he came across a weird-looking Austrian kid with an appetite for success that matched his own, and BBing exploded to its present levels of popularity, just like Arnold's biceps poses.
