Posts Mysteriously Disappearing

Post by Dave on Wed Mar 27, 2013 1:58 am

This is a recent issue with the forumotion service. So far only two members that I am aware of have reported missing posts. The details of this issue are discussed on the forumotion support forum here: http://help.forumotion.com/t121972-posts-mysteriously-disappearing#807902

Long story short is this: In order for us to be assured that posts will not go missing here and there in the future, it has been recommended that we perform a backup of the forum back to the date before the first posts went missing. The first reported missing post I am aware of is GreekPT's March 17 workout, thus that would have to be the date to which the backup is performed, although ther eis no gurantee that this date is in fact the first strike of the forum post Bermuda triangle.

THIS BACKUP WILL DELETE ALL MESSAGE AND POSTS BETWEEN THAT DATE AND THE MOMENT THE BACKUP IS PERFORMED

One option is to perform the backup, which can be done at a predetermined date and time to give members a chance to back up their posts to word or notepad, and then repost them once the backup is completed.

The other option is we do NOT perform the backup and take our chances, hoping that this was a case of isolated incidents.

I will leave this poll open for 3 days and entertain other ideas as well. Post below with your comments, questions, concerns, etc.

By the way, I'm voting no. I consider it to be not worth it to have to copy and paste and then re-post 10 days worth of my posts on the off chance that one of my future posts might go missing. But the community has final say.

I voted for "no".
It is easier for those specific members to repost their lost posts, than all members repost 10 days worth of their posts. and take notice the synchronization of posts will be messed up that way.

While right now I don't think it would be a good idea to take a backup and restore it, it would be a good idea to start taking periodic backups in case the server has something worse happen.

The utilities provided by forumotion cannot be use to not make manual backups. The backups are automatic and are chosen from a drop down list at the time a forum founder needs to restore his or her forum to a previous state.
