Have you ever tried not getting the vaccine? You'd probably get the flu as often as I do (never) if you took the vaccine as often as I do (never). I don't trust that stuff. I won't put anything into my body that I can't see the ingredient list first.

Actually, I'm a firm believer in the flu vaccine. This is the first time I've gotten the flu in about 10 years. Nothing is 100% effective

I managed to get well enough to start morning routine again two days ago, and also my yoga routine and pistol ladders twice now. Still no running though, waiting for residual cough to completely clear before running in this cold weather.

Thanks Josh, I like that one too. Sorry Mike.

I went running for first time in about 2 weeks yesterday, 8 miles at 9'20''/mile. My calves are really feeling it today (just DOMS).

Pistol ladder and splits today. Also towel pulls 21, 14, 10, 8
I did pushups to train for Aztec Warrior's pushup thing, had a run of 35.

No, sorry, misunderstanding. I meant YOU, and I wrote Aztec warrior instead of Inca Warrior. I'm working on that 77 pushup thing you told me about from FB. I could only do 35 regular pushups last attempt, although I've done 50 somewhat recently. Now I'm going to try to fit pushups into my routine somewhere to build up to the 77.

But those Aztec jumping pushups? I don't think I can do those, maybe I'll give it an attempt one day, but that wasn't what I meant.

Got it. Now on 2/2/13 you got to do 22. then 3/3/13 do 33 and so on until 7/7/13 do 77. I am not sure if I can bang out 44 at once though. I max out at 34-35. I will have to work on them. 10:00 blocks in the am like Dave used to do. I am planning on doing them weighted to see if that helps.

I changed my profile pic to a still shot of me doing my Russian dance at my friends' wedding last April. It was dark, and I guess the disco lights were giving a net violet hue in that part of the floor.

I'm gonna skip running today, maybe do some unicycle stuff. Its supposed to be in the low 20's with a wind chill into the single digits.

Yes, the kids always seem to dig it. This is a clip from another wedding from August 2011. I seem to only do this dance at weddings or if we go see a Klezmer band. My wife seems to think I can just do it at a moment's notice, but I actually need to warm up for a couple of minutes.

Also, I'd like to start doing cossacks just for some unilateral leg work and to open up my hips a bit. I recall you do or used to do a bunch of these, any particular method you liked? I know you used a lot of ladders for pistols....

Slow and steady movement to protect the joints as much as possible, with good balance and alignment. The flat foot should be turned out slightly, but this will vary in degree according to your comfort and build. Try to sink down so the flat foot side is in a squat position, other leg straight out toes up. When you switch, either using aid from hands or not, engage all the muscles in both legs to brace the movement and protect the joints, and breath out slowly. Tightening the muscles in the perineum also helps support everything down there (mulabandha in yoga terms). There are a few decent vids of cossack squats on youtube. I don't recommend doing it with weights until you feel really smooth just BW, but if you get to that point, then a chain over your shoulders is a nice way to do it.

Thanks Mike

I got out for a short run after work tonight, out and back over the Manhattan Bridge. 24F and light snow. It was cool to find my vibram footprints in the snow on the way back, and see them slowly disappear in the falling snow by the time I recrossed the bridge. I practically had the bridge to myself! 5 miles at 9'22''/mile.

Busy day planned taking the kids here and there today, so I went from my morning routine (12 sun salutations, locust pose 2 min, 7 tick tocks, 13 HSPU, 20 superman pushups) right into my pistol routine, then 50 pushups. That was a bit over 1 hour all together.

Then steak and eggs for breakfast

Got in a round of towel pulls later 20, 16, 10, 9

No, I did 7 facing the wall, and 6 back to the wall. I've been mixing it up a lot, and I'm starting to prefer facing the wall--it helps me lessen the arch in my back, so my form is better and there's less stress on my lumbar area.

In this morning's routine I did 7 facing wall, 4 FS, then another 3 back to the wall.

Some juggling on the balance ladder and unicycle today for a bit of cardio and core/balance work. Then towel pulls 20, 15, 10, 10 = 55

Haven't seen you mention the ladder in a while. Have you been working with it and just not posting? or did you let it go for a bit? Nice work as usual, I admire your consistency.

For me, it depends on how fast I complete the ladder. If I try for a sub-10 minute ladder, I'm definitely working harder CV wise than I do through a long run. If I do it at a slower pace, like 13-15 min, which is most of the time now, I feel like my heart rate is probably similar to what it is when I run.

Mike - I didn't come up with it. there is a guy in california that started it a couple of years ago to get motivated to increase his push ups. The idea is starting with 11 on 1/1, 22 on 2/2 and so on untill 77 on 7/7. the point is to do them as one set or the least amount of sets possible. We did it up to 9/9 for 99 last year but could not get them at one clip. The most I have ever done at a clip is 35. so have lots of work to do.

5 mile run home from work, 8'09''/mi This is a very good time for me, and I'm suspicious that the GPS in my phone might have been off a bit, but I'll take it!

yesterday's BWE
pistols, splits
towel pulls 20, 16, 10, 10
53 pushups: I'm trying to encourage my son (8 years) and daughter (6 years) to do pushups not just when I order them as an instant punishment. So I bet them that I'd do 8x however many decent-form pushups they could do (whichever kid did the highest number). My son did 8, and when I told him I'd have to finish the last 11 reps after a short rest, he let me out of it. My daughter did 7 with very good form!
