Hey there guys

Post by Elethor on Mon Jul 01, 2013 6:55 pm

Hey, I was a lurker in the BWC forums, and I had a tendency to disappear for extended periods of times (posts in 2008 and 2012, nothing in between. Haha). I'm hoping that I can join you guys on this side and keep myself properly motivated and also generally filled with ideas on how to be working out. Anyways, just a short introduction.

The name is Mohamad Haziq, Haziq is fine, elethor, elly or whatever suits your fancy (I suppose one grows into a new nickname at every new meeting), I just turned 21 earlier this year and I play rugby. I used to exercise a lot more but have recently had a fade away from exercise due to university life and also a general lack of motivation. I used to do weight work (more towards exercises like the deadlift and squats than anything else) and bodyweight work. Currently I'm trying to restart my fitness lifestyle. Currently I rarely exercise daily, and I only go for rugby practice twice a week, over the weekends.

I'm hoping to be able to become a better all round athlete, more towards a power athlete however as it makes more sense in relation to the sport I choose. I am hoping to learn a lot of great things from everyone ! By the way, incase anyone wants to help me out off the bat, I'm going for a once a week heavy lifting session mixed with bodyweight training on the rest of the days, unless of course everyone thinks its better to do more work in the gym .

And if there's any information you'd or premade thread I probably missed, link me ! Or I'll probably stumble upon it later.

Thanks one and all for even bothering to read and hope I haven't too much of a fool of myself :)

Welcome friend.  :)   My suggestion is consider carefully about the differences between the kind of strength you build from each style of training vs how specialized or generalized you ultimately want to be, and then tailor your efforts accordingly, changing it up as you progress, but not too much.  Decide on a few key movements using the type of strength you want to be able to express and train them most often.  And shore up weak links that develop (or re-develop) along the way.

Thank you dave for the prompt reply. Forgive me if the following question sounds rather immature but when you refer to different kinds of strength, are you referring to the differences between explosive, pure strength and endurance or am I missing the boat entirely here ? . And to see if I am understanding this right, by key movements, you ARE referring to key exercises that I am concentrating on right ? And not err.. other movements ? :D

That's what I mean to an extent, but there are subtleties even between the type of explosiveness you would build from plyometric pushups and the kind you get from Olympic lifting or sprinting, or kicking, etc.  It's all about the journey to find the things that you enjoy most and then continually improve at them, whether it is gymnastic, lifting weights, martial arts or everything in between.

My movements of choice usually end up being basics like squats, deadlifts, pushups, pullups, dips and variations of the same.

Welcome Elethor, stick to the basics like Dave says, follow a programming plan like Starting Strength and  play your rugby and you will improve no end.  With a name like yours you could also do some hammer work ;)

Thanks JohnnyD, hoping to do just that, keep to the basics and keep growing stronger. But I do like the idea of doing Hammer work, it'd make for a badass profile photo ! :D

That's actually quite a pleasant surprise. I don't meet to many people online who has met anyone from Malaysia truth be told :/. And sometimes there is a problem with them not even knowing the place (it happens).

Thanks for asking though Rix ! Probably would have neglected to mention otherwise

From what I read from this, I'm actually unsure whether you were unfit in school, or whether you're literally three times fitter now !

I was saying yes to both. I was 6' and 135 lbs. in high school. The only sports I played was in phys ed.

I'm now 6'2" and almost 170 lb. Go take a look at the last page of my workout log to see what kind of working out I do.

That is impressive. Even more so after looking at your workout log man. . Fortune 500 sounds suitably tempting once I regain moooore of my fitness !

All you have to do is set aside the time and have some water around. It helps if you like that "I think I may die right here, right now" feeling!
I would rather die doing exercise than in some hospice.

Never forget, there's always modifications for every workout. I teach a free class for my church and I just modify the workouts to fit them.
For instance- instead of the Fortune 500, it would be
Nest Egg 125 by cutting everything down to 25 each.(I just made up that name ;) - it's what I do...)
By putting a name to the workout, it makes it "real".

Sounds suitably scaled down. I'd probably need to attempt it really. From 125 all the way to 500. I'm less of a sadist on myself

Personally, I don't have anything against Crossfit. It's not my cup of tea, though. Many people have gotten into good shape through it. Others have injured themselves (disproportionately many) doing it.
The main issue we have is the sloppy technique they use for some of the exercises. We like more controlled movements.

I see. So I haven't really seen much of crossfit. What I have seen so far hasn't impressed me. Anywhere for me to see the difference of their training and yours ?
