I did the following:
15 close stance squats
15 slow eccentric (4 seconds) fast concentric squats
15 hindu squats
10 super slow eccentric (7 seconds) jump squats
5 as above but goblet with 16 kg KB
40 Regular squats

My legs and glutes are really sore from the trap bar squats yesterday. Good!

Had a dream that I was a high priority target and the police were surrounding my house. I was trying to find a way to hide in the attic when I woke up and realized I was hot and sweating. Had a shower, checked in with you guys and it's almost time for bed again.

First, a bit more cramming. You see, tomorrow (Wednesday) is the day I have been working towards. I have an appointment at the hospital at 1:00 to write their in house Medical Device Reprocessing Techniques test. It is 25 questions, multiple choice. If I pass with 80% or higher, I will be scheduled for a job interview.

Thanks Cesar, you're probably right about the test anxiety.  I wrote it today and passed with 92%!  Job interview is tomorrow at 1:00 pm.  They don't have positions just yet, but they expect to within two months or less and want to have the candidates already chosen by the time they need them.  Gettin' pretty real up in here, dog!

Update: I had to wait until yesterday to hear anything back. Here is the story: There are two positions that were posted on the hospital website, but they filled one externally already and want to wait to see if there will be any internal applicants before filling the other. If there are no successful internal applicants (and I have an insider who tells me that there rarely are any who transfer from other departments to the MDRD), then I will be made an offer to begin work on January 5th.

The suspense is killing me!

Thanks a lot!  And in the meantime, I have created my own income stream.  I just finished doing 1 hour and 15 minutes of work sharpening 4 Mac knives and a Japanese chef knife for someone who had seen my Kijiji ad.  I charged $40, but she gave me a $5 tip, so it adds up to $36 an hour.  As time goes on I will get faster, of course.

Here is my ad.

I just made the video today.  Hopefully it will generate further clientele. Eventually I'll get paid ads on the radio, in the paper, etc. Aiming to bump the volume up in this business to pull in a substantial income.

Thanks Cesar.  Just a training update:  No real training.  Just stretching, squats, deadlifts, presses and pushups thrown in here and there when time and energy allows.  I think  I'll be keeping it like this until the new year. Still riding my bike to work in the freezing cold, of course.

Not as long as they are considered legal to own.  Most knives are legal here, including daggers.  The list of those considered illegal is pretty limited.

Good luck with your business. My husband is pretty good at sharpening knives, axes, and so on himself. I have some pretty nice, high end kitchen knives we got as a wedding present, and I do have to say that if my husband wasn't kicking around I'd probably pay someone to sharpen all of them from time to time.

Re: Dave's Countdown to Greater Strength

I think most people would, except those who keep on it regularly.  The duller a knife gets the longer it takes to sharpen.  And most people don't have any kind of sharpening system at all, let alone even a small carbide V sharpener.

On stones I would shudder to sharpen a dull knife just due to the shear amount of metal that would have to be removed to re-profile the edge.  I haven't used stones in a long time, but that ended up more due to their cost.  I mostly did hand sharpening.  Instead of stones, I used multiple grits of sandpaper tacked onto a variety of surfaces over the years.  But stone had a "coarse" grit of 600 on one side and fine grit of 1000 on the other.  This was fine for fine honing of an already sharp blade, but when an edge had to be totally reshaped, it took so long that I almost gave up sharpening altogether.  I was tempted to go back exclusively to those V carbide sharpeners which remove way too much metal while applying an ugly and toothy V-grind edge.  I much prefer a convex grind for its Samurai sword cutting efficiency and durability.

To that end I began using the sandpaper and mouse method of sharpening.  Using this method, which inherently creates a convex edge, combined with low grits (80, 120, 180) I could either not find or afford in stones, I was able to re-profile just about any small to moderately sized edge (say up to 8" high carbon stainless steel) in decent time, once I had practiced up.

My current set up, however, allows me to do it in a fraction of the time, so yay for that. Thanks for the well wishes!

The cost of stones is what has kept me from sharpening my own straight razors (I have two good ones).
I NEED to send them off so I can start shaving with them again!

May as well log my haphazard workouts too, so here is today's pre-work morning workout:

Prisoner squats x 10
KB goblet squats @ 36 lb x 10
High bar squats @ 155 x 10

x 3 Rounds

Then High bar squats @ 200 x 10
One more BW squat to make 101 total

Hindu Pushups x 30

I love them and need to get back into them. They always make shoulders feel great and fill out my chest in a way that pushups and bench press never do. A good compliment to both, I'd say. Too bad your shoulders don't like them... maybe in time as you heal up.

I hope so, Dave. I hope so. I miss OH presses, pull ups. Last night, I had both boys pass out - one on each side of me. As I was trying to get up, I supported myself on my left hand and my shoulder was not happy.

Just completed 7 hindu push ups just to see what is going on. First 5 completed slow and controlled - with minimal issue. 6th and 7th rep, i picked up the tempo which was not comfortable and at the same time, not sure if it was tempo or fatigue. I will give them a shot, slow and steady. they felt good, though.

Good to hear.

So the news is in: The person who vacated the position at KGH has returned, so apparently the union has a provision to allow returning employees precedence over everyone else.  There is no position available at the hospital for me at this time, and I am now on a waiting list for the next available position.

In other news:

High Bar Squats
200 x 20

Deadlift
200 x 20

Hindu Pushup (looking over each shoulder at the top of each rep)
20

KRO
20

Superset x 10 rounds
Conv. Shrugs 200 x 15
Overhead resistance band squats x 8

Finished in less than 15 minutes.  Pumped, gassed and sweaty, aka, the physiological equivalent of happiness.  :whew:

Totally impromptu, random workout, hitting things I really ought to hit.

Cleans
135 x 5

Full ROM NG (trap bar) Overhead Press
45 x 10
65 x 10
85 x 10
105 x 6 + f

5 ROUNDS OF:
Close stance 16 kg KB goblet squats x 20
Press (as above) 105 x 3
Trap bar rows 105 x 12

5 ROUNDS OF:
KRO x 10
Hindu Pushups x 10
Supermans x 15 (5 regular, then 5 opposing arm and leg each side)

Needless to say, I have again achieved my former state of happiness.

Another simple session:

Hindu Pushups, static contractions at the top, low volume, focus was on time under tension.
Squats x 50
Pistols x 1/1, 1/1
Basic Shrimps x 1/1
Backroll Pistols like on FB x 1/1, 1/1
Then 40 more squats.

Alternating sets of hand release pushups x 12, hindu pushups x 12, 8 total sets and 4 extra pushups to round it off at 100.
