Kevin Ogar was performing a powerlift when his spine was severed and he lost the use of his legs.
...

“It was just kind of a freak accident,” CrossFitter Christian Lucero said.

Saw that article - would liked to have seen it ACTUALLY happen, but I've found no footage on it. Seeing as I've never heard of this before, I would say it is just a freak accident.

It looks like he missed a snatch attempt and the weight landed on his lower back. So pretty much a freak accident. Never heard of anything of this sort happening before.

Hope he gets better.

Ouch! I've missed a snatch and had it brush my back before, but I kept my torso upright enough that it didn't cause any damage.

> He was doing 3rm touch and go snatches (wtf?) as an event in a competition

>after 7 other endurance related events, including a bunch of burpees, 5 'fran's, swimming, and running (wtf...)

>athletic history (rugby, I think? He was pretty strong) but little olympic lifting skill

Any one of those factors could've resulted in a serious injury all by themselves....

>No medical staff on site

>he's not insured

>The bar fell behind him, bounced up and hit him as he fell, severing his T11 vertebrae

And now he's paralyzed from the waist down.

That's awful. Sounds like a terrible set of circumstances but also like he put himself in a bad situation. We are not invincible, and sometimes we can forget that. Unfortunately, bad decisions can have terrible consequences.
