Rikrocks journey to the Frozen Otter

Post by rikrock on Tue Dec 11, 2012 10:38 am

Great timing for this site. I have begun my training for the Frozen Otter in Jan. 2014 so just over a year of prep to go. The Frozen Otter is a 64 mile 24 hour ultra event in Wisconsin in the Kettle Moraine 3rd weekend in January (traditionally the coldest weekend of the year). It's held on the ice age glacial trail in Dundee WI. only 2% of racers ever finish this race on average. By the third check point (24 miles) 75% of entries quit! If you do not cross the finish in 24 hrs you are pulled from the course! I love that!!

I am a 2 percenter to be sure. I will not be defeated. BTW... no snow shoes or skiis allowed you have required gear you must ruck (about 30lbs) so this is gonna be good. I have a client I train who will be joining me in this one. He's about half my age, a combat vet missing a toe and a miriad of other deployment induced disabilities but is just as nutty as me so we will both finish this one! Also remember 16 hours of this race is in the dark.

I will be posting the workouts of course and am always looking for any insight and training suggestions for this endeavour. Yeah Greek I'm talking to you brother :)

Great to be here!

Already prepared to avoid frostbite! If you're as crazy as you say you are (and since you actually want to do this, I know this is true) then you two won't have any trouble

I recommend a big beard to keep warm and look awesome.

Been swinging a pick and shovel for 3 hrs each day for 3 days digging trenches, foxholes and hides for the kids. Been a little while since I've worked that way but the workouts do contribute to an ease of it.

Also did core workouts on same days at the club. ab rollouts, dragon flags, rebounder work etc. Heavy ruck tomorrow. going to do 95lbs for one hour. WWII reinactments to begin soon at the house. I'll post some pics and vids when complete. Yeah some dads build tree houses but what's cooler then tunnels, hides and foxholes?! The family militia is in full training mode

Good Hump did some airborne shuffle too. Rained the whole time with some wind. Of course now the blizzard is hitting nearly whiteout already. Yeah my focus will be legs and core for the most part. Interval training and heavy rucking. I'll begin running in the summer also.

Hung in well actually if we had to go another hour or so I may have tightened up a bit. The good news is I felt great all day. wasn't stiff after sitting for a while or anything and the feet feel great too so I've rounded a good corner! got some snow yesterday and major winds out there still this morning so hoping to get on the snow shoes when I'm done with the mornings training sessions!!

My legs are my strongest suit so they powered through. Actually needed more! I left one thing out and that was the step crossovers if you notice the edit.

1/2/13

15min fast rope warm up

single leg verticles 3x30sec
bodybar shuffle 3x10
tire hops 3x30sec (into middle, on top, middle, over)
Step crossovers 50lbs 15 per leg 3x
tire dead lifts (175lbs) 3x30 sec (22,23,25)
Ab rollouts 1x10
All with only 30 sec rest between sets. felt real good. dead lifts were full lock out too was racing my training partner for reps. He had to stop on last set almost puked
Did this routine on Monday as well plus I rucked with 45lbs on the treadmil with a client with 45lbs in pack only did 1.5 miles. How do people do treadmils I was bored to tears. Glad this kid is getting some boots! We'll be doing 3 miles outside today with 65lbs keeping it under 1 hr.

I hear ya on the treadmill thing. My wife can get on it for 45-60 minutes.
I can't stand it -so I don't do it.
Welll, except she learned a core workout on it. You use your hands to do the walking several different ways. It's killer! We'll get a video up in a bit.

Cool!
I was thinking that you didn't have much training time. I noticed a lot of people trying to sell their entries because of sickness. That's got to be a bummer to get all ready for something like that and then get sick.
