Hulse loses his mind

Post by Journeyman on Sat Mar 29, 2014 1:25 am

Not a fan of Hulse. Still, this surprised me.

Language warning.

And so that I don't waste your time, something legitimately amusing:

I tend to like Elliot. If you can get past the pseudoscience and crap like that video, he seems to have a lot of good training advice.

Its actually interesting; I've noticed that a lot of fitness people on youtube have very extreme views and beliefs. Maybe its because the type of person who can dedicate himself to training for years is also the type of person who holds extreme beliefs.

He has some decent stuff for beginners but nothing special or revolutionary (or even original) so I have no idea why he takes himself so seriously, or talks with a thesaurus. Some people seem to do that when their view counters on youtube reach a certain number, and it's annoying.

And you're right. Though I think it's more that most people have some sort of view that others might normally find quirky or weird and dismiss it; but with a soapbox (like a very popular youtube channel) they can spread it around and their followers will eat it up.
I don't think we're any more likely to hold extreme beliefs than the people who have the dedication to get up early every morning even if they're tired (a kind of dedication that baffles me; I'm sure some of you have it and think nothing of it... much like how we see our training as routine, but others are impressed by our motivation).

I remember listening to a podcast with Dorian Yates and he was talking about smoking some sort of drug and tapping in to a government conspiracy about poisoning water or some such nonsense. Completely ridiculous.
Not to compare Hulse to Yates. One is a drugged-up legend of a bodybuilder, the other is a drugged-up strongman who likes to hear himself talk.
...Anyway.

That's a good possible alternative explanation. Probably most of us have ideas that sound crazy to any given other person. Still, there is something inherent to the nature of fitness that I think attracts a certain type of person...

Well that's disappointing. I remember hearing some podcasts of Dorian Yates and he seemed really cool and down to earth.

I don't remember. He seemed to think that the monarchy was mind-controlling half the population of Britain, or something like that.

This is interesting. I agree 100%, but I'm not sure if these are their actual beliefs, or part of a persona they adopt when addressing the public.

I don't think it's a question of character or personality, more of a lack of formal education (not in every instance, of course) and what Journeyman said, the soapbox effect.

I think I listened to the interview with Dorian Yates in which he mentioned taking mind-altering substances, and was pretty candid about it too. It went downhill rapidly toward the end when he started talking about the govt. mind control conspiracy, but otherwise great interview.

EDIT: don't know who Hulse is, but that video looks like a marketing ploy to me.

Hulse is an ex-strongman (and not a really good one) who has an enormously popular youtube channel through which he disseminates rather average-quality S&C info and a whole lotta BS. (As in, videos of himself thrashing and screaming with 'bioenergetic fields' after being tapped on the head... and taking himself completely seriously in doing so.)

He also tends to talk with a thesaurus.
...I'm not a fan, haha.
