Looking for some book recommendations

Post by Glinda on Mon Mar 31, 2014 6:12 pm

Hi everyone,

I am wondering if there is a good, relatively well researched book on the history of exercise/physical fitness training, particularly ones that cover training in the 19th century. Gymnastics, calisthenics, weightlifting etc.

It's been really interesting reading about the history of the modern Olympics, yoga (which surprisingly has some European gymnastics influences from the early 19th century), and early 20th century athletic competitions (as seen on YouTube). But I'd really like to know if anyone has read a book that gave an overview and tied it in with changing socio-cultural trends through the 19th and 20th centuries?

I don't think there is one--maybe you'd have to write it! One excellent historical book is The Super-Athletes, by David Willoughby. Mainly focuses on the history of strength feats but there's plenty of cultural snippets in there as well.

I also have a good number of articles that may help you to some extent, if you PM me your email I can hook you up with those.
