I enjoy them in salad. I like red onions due to the strong flavor. Do not eat them like an apple or tomatoe.

Raw onions and garlic contain an enzyme called Allicin that acts as a natural antibiotic. The old time remedy for strep throat was "eat a whole raw onion". We eat a ton of raw onion and garlic all winter long, there's nothing better than a big slab of onion on a bowl of Pinto Beans.

Coorrrr I love raw onions. Prefer white ones with meat and red ones in salads.

Garlic can also help penis problems.

Allium vegertables!  What a wonderful genus!  Raw onions are especially delicious in tuna sandwiches.   :chef:

They're even better when everyone around you is eating them, too.

Remember, too much of a good thing...

If you're eating them because it boosts Testosterone in RATS...you're eating them for the wrong reasons. First, you're making the assumption that rat physiology is identical to human physiology. Second, have there been any randomized controlled studies showing this IN HUMANS? Test boosters, in general, suck. There's maybe like one on the market that may produce beneficial results. Tribulus, all that other crap is a complete waste of time.

This is kinda like (may burst some bubbles here, idk) the HFCS scare a few years ago. Yes, when you pump rats with over 200g of pure HFCS, you're going to get heart problems, extreme obesity, atherosclerosis, cancer, whatever. But there was a review in (I think) the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition sometime around 2010-2013 (don't remember the exact year; I'd have to pull it up) essentially saying that in normal physiological amounts, it's pretty harmless in humans. You'd have to have like 6 sodas a day, EVERY DAY, for a long time to produce the results in the rat studies. And at that point, it's pretty safe to assume that there's a lot more wrong with that person's diet besides just sodas as well.

Anyway - point being, one study doesn't conclusively prove anything. If there were like, 5-10 studies in humans showing the same effect (preferably more), it may be a good idea to eat onions for that reason. Otherwise, nah.

yeah i know it actually doesn't have anything to do with human physiology, and they don't even let the rats EAT it, so the digestive system doesn't filter it. but regardless of that study it's power food.

Right. I'm just saying don't jump to the conclusion and claim that's why you're eating it. If you KNOW it probably doesn't carry over, why claim it does?

Very good food though. Has some allicin (not near as much as Garlic), and is also a VERY good source of prebiotics (stuff that feeds the good ol' bacteria in your GI).

This is slightly off topic, but if you want to know how to maximize preparation of these foods (particularly garlic for the allicin), I would recommend reading Eating on the Wild Side by Jo Robinson. Our library ordered it and I read it, and it's like a giant compendium of how to store/prepare/eat vegetables and fruits to maximize the nutrient content of whatever it is that you're eating. I'd use it more as a reference, as it's kind of hard to read cover-to-cover, but its VERY good.
