eBook Readers

Post by squatty on Mon Jun 09, 2014 11:16 am

I recently bought a Kobo Aura HD with my student loan ,a luxury purchase for a person not in a luxury state right now; but I didn't hesitate it at all.

I researched the available devices on the market and finally came with Aura HD as the most suitable (but not perfect) eReader for "me".

I emailed Kobo and told a lot of suggestions on where their device lacks (in software) that could be fixed without any extra production cost, to make their device closer to perfect. (for example on PDF navigation in landscape more, the page is divided in two equal segments, but instead of just a single touch to go to the bottom segment of a page, you have to drag. also when you switch pages, the bottom segment is shown FIRST! really annoying)
They said they will fix these in their next firmware, let's see... (Since I can't wait, I might install android on my Kobo for more freedom)

Anyway, this piece of plastic has changed my academic life for the good, my daily study time has increased almost 30%.
And my eyes are safer now.
And each charge lasts a very long time (the catalog says 2 months, at 30 mins of reading daily with the backlight ON, but I study with the light OFF, and it has just gone from 100% to 84% after 55 hours of reading)

After my Nook first edition got crushed I upgraded to the Nook Glo, it's great except for the fact that it fails miserably when it comes to Chinese texts. Which is unfortunate, since I don't like to have to read on my phone.

Other than that I recommend pretty much anything over Kindle. Until Amazon receives a stiff kick to the backside and is required to play nice with other shopes, Kindle books can only be used on Kindle devices, whereas epub books can be read pretty much everywhere.

I have a Kindle Paperwhite, and would recommend it. Traveling is much easier these days (and lighter!).

Probably not in the same category, but I just got (a few weeks ago) a Nexus 7 . It has Kindle on it. I love this thing! I'm going to download some maps for my trip to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in June. I've already got a bunch of music on it for the (motorcycle) trip.
It was factory refurbished with 32 gigs of memory for under $200. It's got a 7" screen which makes it great for a motorcycle.
