Unconventional Physical Challenges

Post by MF! on Mon Jun 01, 2015 12:47 am

Hey People!!

Just curious what challenges/ contest exist in the world that I may not have considered. When I think of conventional I'm referring to running races, bike races, triathalon etc, as well as power lifting and olympic lifting which are starting to gain some popularity in the fitness community (at least from what I'm seeing in Canada).

I know that calisthenic competitions are a thing, and strong man and bouldering challenges also exist. Wondering what others I may have missed.

One of my favorite quotes:

"The only physical endeavors worth competing in are lifting heavy, throwing heavy, running fast, running far, and fighting."

Calisthenic competitions aren't very legit in my eyes. They're usually either basic stuff done for a gazillion reps (there's inevitable form breakdown) or it's a bunch of members of the bar community kinda showing off for each other with little to no rules and structure. Fun, I'm sure, but not a real, measurable competition.

Bouldering/competitive climbing is an incredibly deep sport. I know a few people who've competed at a pretty high level and it's no joke.

If you get the chance to do an amateur highland games comp or something like that, that could be fun.

Obstacle races are gaining some popularity. Again, with the variance in courses it's hard to measure unless the same athletes compete on multiple courses. I have one friend who's very competitive in that as well.

If none of that interests you, there's always chess boxing and competitive eating. Seriously, there's a competition for everything.

haha i dont have my teenage appetite anymore. don't think i could stomach getting into an eating contest.

the only obstacle races i see are warrior dash and tough mudder etc. i tried warrior dash a couple years ago, and hated how easy the obstacles were. i'd be down for some short range "sprint" obstacle courses

there some calisthenics competitions where they require proper form, eg weighted calisthenics battle organized by Adam Raw, 1 rep max for Pull up, Back squat and Dips and max reps with 32kg pull ups, 48kg dips, 16kg pistols

although those other are really joke, people win cause they spinned more times on a bar

He'd say something like "lava surfing, riding horses backwards, and fighting armies of zombie dinosaurs armed with half a breadstick."

Lol!  And it's him armed with the half breadstick, right, or is it the dino-zombies?  :loopy:  That wouldn't be fair, you know, because it might be just enough to tip the scales in their favour.

is this the right link for it? http://www.goruck.com/tough/c/25

seems interesting but what does the actual challenge look like? It seems similar to tough mudder.

That's it.

Lots of hiking/rucking and calisthenics with 30 lbs on your back. There's also a 50 lb group weight you have to work together to carry. The group is lead by current/former members of the military. From what I understand they keep the start point secret until the week before the challenge. You could end up downtown or out in the woods.
I follow Rif's blog and and he's training for it.

Rif is good people, I've spoken with him a few times and he's always been generous with his time; not to mention having a ton of experiences to share. Opinionated, but worth listening to--just take a pinch of salt with some of what he says.

Cool. I like his log because he's older than me and more broken down than me (knee replacement) but still gets out there and get's it done. Very inspiring for those of us over 50.

Very broken down. There's the line about giving your body to a sport--he's done that with like 5 sports. Tons of respect for him in that regard.
