Surviving 2016

Post by Avocadoshake on Fri Jan 01, 2016 5:56 pm

My major goal in 2015 was to survive the year with toddler and newborn.

I barely survived. I suffered from a herniated disk since fall and I'm now recovering well.

I wanted to read much and I guess I did so, I haven't counted how much it was yet. A very large part was comics/ manga in english. And Bukowski.

Looking back, a few unexpected things happened besides the disk giving up the ghost:

I could finally establish an almost regular swimming regime while my oldest daughter is doing Ju Jitsu.
I started drawing/ painting again.
And I re-started to learn Japanese on a daily basis and now I have mastered some grammar basics already, up to 400 words and two writing systems, ok one of them is romaij which is the alphabet we're using as well right now :eyebrows:
The other one is hiragana: そう です。

I'm now using my roadbike for commute. I gifted myself with a shorter stem and voilà, it's more practicable to use this fast machine.

I try to continue healing, learning and exercising (and updating hopefully in 2016).

The last days of 2015 I did a lot of walking, cycling, swimming and rehab, so this entry isn't so beefy:

2016-01-01 Fri.:
Gymnastic
100 push ups

Oh, almost forgot, I grew a beard in 2015 and kept it the whole year and I'm going to keep it 2016 as well :beardy:

Keep swimming Brother. That's got to be doing that back some good.
I read Bukowski once. Did the whole book in two sittings. It was like a horrible accident I couldn't take my eyes away from.
Wallace Stevens is my favorite American poet with Frost a close second.

Guys, Happy New Year!
Bill, I agree on Bukowski, I preferred Henry Miller. I may read those poets you mentioned.
I gave The Catcher in the Rye a second try and dind't like it a bit. We read it in school when I was 16, didn't like it as well back then. I was hoping the original text would be better, sadly it wasn't. I understood it much better that time and even found some funny bits, but that didn't change a thing.

Anyway...

Just to try them out, I'd recommend Stevens' "Six Significant Landscapes" and Frost's "Death of the Hired Man".

Did I tell you that my wife stored the weights away :D, I managed to get two 5 kg DBs before that happened, lol. I haven't fancied the heavier weights much either lately - for apparent reasons, I get my weighted vest out, I guess.

I wouldn't mind to get my 12 kg back for presses. I might try that. It's not the weight for the exercise, it's the handling.
I'll re-start with weighted squats today. I have had them in rehab as well, I also did deadlifts - we went up to 25 kg.
Atm. we're focusing on the small stabilising muscles in the front and back. The guy is eager to get me back on track asap :D.
Oh, and we we're talking a lot about ji gong, yoga and alternative training methods. He suggested I should start doing dips btw.

We did "the snake" and I was unsure whether my triceps would like it, so he suggested strengthening them. However he also approved frog push ups :D.
I showed him "the crow" instead and he even succeeded with his first try.

2016-01-07 Thu.:
Afternoon walk with the kids
2 x 12 Pull ups
Gymnastic
BW Squats: 10
Squats with 2 x 5kg DB: 4 x10
Curls with 2 x 5kg DB: 3 x 10
Crow handstand

For now I'll do like a good rehab patient, going through the particular exercises, they're doing good. A great part of it is muscle awareness.

Re: Surviving 2016

Post by Avocadoshake on Sat Jan 09, 2016 6:58 pm

Ugh, yesterday or today - as you like to see it, while I was doing the last training - it was around midnight and finally the kids were sleeping and I was getting the last session in, problems started with Flora.
She started to throw up and between 1:00 til 2:30 or even longer, she showed clear signs of stomach flue and instead finally going to bed, I was cleaning up the floor, the bed, Flora over and over in no particular order.

As of today she already seems over the hump and almost recovered.
Still after the hard night this day seems like a good one and what I've accomplished. I made all the beds new again - while I was at it, we threw out a large bag of obsolete computer cables to be recycled, we had nourishing meals, I even managed to get the lost sleep in - Flora needed me for cuddling and I fell asleep around noon as well.

I had a walk in the afternoon and:
12 Pull ups
plus my daily gymnastic and rehab exercises.

Now it's time for some hot shower wellness and sleep. ;)

Cesar, I think I'm 80% recovered, but I wouldn't want to go singletrail riding anytime soon.
As I'd like to go heavier, the handling of the weights, not the exercises, wouldn't be so good atm. I guess.

Flora is at 80% herself. She was already up and running the day after, however her digestive system still is sensitive.

2016-01-15 Tue.:

A walk in the snow
12 Pull ups
Gymnastic

And instead of doing more training, I went in the cellar to put spike tyres on the Enduro bike. Now I can switch between the roadbike if conditions are clear, or use the with spikes armed mtb when things get slippery.

I still have to attend 9 more sessions of physio to which I go by bike - about 24 miles total.

After yesterdays rehab I was pretty sore. We threw balls at each other, standing on an unstable surface. Standing on one foot.
We also did planks and supermans but that wasn't it.

I was remembered on Bill's story when he was standing on flexing ladder and the day after he felt like being clubbed.

Online hardcore pundits advocate working up to walking or running barefoot in the cold winters by doing it all year long, especially for the duration of the fall as the temperature gradually drops.

Dave: I actually would prefer the curls with the Kettlebells, however I could not add much weight, because they really can hurt the forearms - in a good way imho - I haven't probably had as much weight as you. :)

Cesar: Toothing seems to make a break - for now - phew.

On the walking in the snow: Actually it was my wife who told me that. One of her colleagues/ friends told her she does it quite often in the morning. My mother used to walk barefoot through the dew on the grass when she was walking the dogs. I probably would like to do an experiment of walking barefoot through the seasons, but atm I won't go any further as to the garages, because any further it would be very much salt on the road/ boardwalks to keep them snow free.

OK, yesterday no swimming, because Clara did feel slightly uneasy and skipped her Ju Jitsu class. So no swimming for me, I could've gone probably anyway, but I wasn't really much into it either.

Wednesday 2016-01-20:

First a 24 km 70 min bike ride getting to my therapist. Streets mostly covered with packed snow. Used my Enduro with studded tyres.
We did machines first. Pull downs, rows, extensions and some sort of rotating the lower body against resistance.
Then ball throws on an unstable surface.

Back home I had to wash the salt off the bike to be on the safe side - two buckets with warm water should be sufficient.

Later in the afternoon I went sledge/ sleigh riding with a neighbor next door and his kid - about the same age as Flora.
Finally I ended up towing them home - the kids, because we had an old fashioned sleigh you can also pull over tarmac.

Finished the day with my mobility/ stretching gymnastic.

Quite sore today :)

2016-01-27 Wed.:

60 min bike (clear conditions, roadbike)
rehab - we did back squats with 40 kg today
Gymnastic

I was pondering wether I should try bent press with light weights my 5 kg DBs and/ or two hands anyhow.

Maybe I try some tomorrow with no or very low weight 0.5 kg for testing/practicing the movement and some TGUs...?

Would be a little fun.
